NOKIA LUMIA 1020
$999 (without contract), from all telcos and Nokia Store. 4.5-inch touch screen, 41-megapixel rear camera, 6x optical zoom. EASE OF USE At 158g, it’s lighter than the Samsung but heavier than the iPhone 5S. It comes with a detachable camera grip to hold it steady for indoor shots without flash. The lens sticks out slightly from the back of the smartphone, and even though it’s less bulky than the Samsung, it’s still hard to take a photo one-handed, because of its size. It’s easier to adjust aperture, shutter speed and ISO, thanks to a shortcut toolbar with manual settings. RESPONSIVENESS The slowest of the lot – it lagged four seconds from shot to shot. OUTDOOR SHOTS Gave the best outdoor shots, with rich and vibrant colours. INDOOR SHOTS The star performer in low-light settings – images were the clearest and sharpest. The flash lit up subjects well, but added a yelloworange hue. However, I could simply raise the ISO to take clear indoor shots without using the flash. CLOSE-UPS Macro shots were the most vibrant and sharp, even when I zoomed in on flowers. MODES & EFFECTS Fewer options than the Samsung but more than the iPhone 5S. Other than panoramic shots, its Smart Cam function shoots a sequence of photos so you can choose the best or combine them into one image. I like the Collage feature best – it collates up to seven photos into one image, which I could only do with an app in other devices. To add effects, I had to use its Creative Studio app, with eight filters. VERDICT Gives the sharpest and most vibrant shots, indoors and outdoors. If only it were quicker, for catching spontaneous moments.
