Q Are parabens really bad for my skin? – Li Hui Shan, 31, civil servant A: Parabens are chemicals used in cosmetic products as a preservative, and have been linked to breast cancer. But Mah Mei Hui, pharmacist and managing director of The Skin Pharmacy, says: “There is no conclusive study that links parabens to breast cancer – it doesn’t mean that using a product with parabens will lead to breast cancer.” Those with sensitive skin, however, should be careful when using products with preservatives, including parabens. Mei Hui adds: “To avoid parabens, you can check out plant-based alternatives such as grapefruit seed extract or plant-based benzoic acid.”
