ENTER THE ESSENCE LOTION

Just as you prep for everything in life, you also need to prepare your skin to help it function at its best. One way is to get it wonderfully hydrated before using treatment products like anti-ageing serums. You can do that by replacing your toner with an essence lotion.

It’s Not a Toner

The role of most toners is to balance the skin’s pH level while removing gunk left behind after cleansing. Some remove excess oil and help unclog pores to prevent breakouts. Others contain hydrating ingredients so you don’t experience skin tightness.

Essence lotions, unlike toners, provide instant hydration – think of them as super-lightweight moisturisers that come in clear, fast-absorbing, waterlike textures. They may be known by any of these names: essence lotion, essence-in-lotion, softening lotion or treatment lotion.

They’re said to leave your skin radiant, more supple, softer to the touch, and more receptive to skincare products that follow. Some of these lotions do more than moisturise. They help address other skin concerns like acne, brightening and anti-ageing, too.

Asian Skin Needs More Hydration

Researchers at Clinique found that Asian skin is more prone to irritation and dehydration because it lacks filaggrin, a protein that helps produce natural moisturising factors (NMFs), which keep your skin well hydrated.

To address this, Clinique developed the Even Better Essence Lotion (100ml), $55, which contains an NMF complex of watermelon, apple and lentil extracts to increase filaggrin production and boost the skin’s natural ability to restore moisture.

It also contains antioxidant-rich ingredients that help to brighten your complexion, and anti-inflammatory ingredients like tamarind extract and caffeine, to calm and soothe irritation. It comes in two formulas: a thicker lotion to keep dry to dry-combination skin hydrated, and another in a refreshing water-like texture to help normalise sebum production in oily to oilycombination skin.
