The BIG Cheese
Light, yet creamy and cheesy enough – that’s what we were looking for in these Japanese cheesecakes.
1 SNAFFLE’S CHEESE CATCH CAKES $19.80 for a box of eight, from Snafes, #B2-56 Plaza Singapura, tel: 6884-6077 and #B2-K2 Bedok Mall, tel: 6844-9390 This bite-sized cheesecake was more buttery than cheesy, more dense than fluffy. It was so soft that it crumbled as we pushed a fork through. Butter-cake fans would like its meltin-the-mouth creaminess, but as a cheesecake, it lacked the requisite cheesiness. 2 UNCLE TETSU JAPANESE CHEESECAKE $9.90, from Uncle Tetsu Cheesecake, #B4-35 Ion Orchard, tel: 9871-2221 While soft, this cheesecake was denser than the rest in the line-up. It wasn’t overly sweet, but we tasted more eggs and milk than cheese. 3 FIESTA JAPANESE CHEESECAKE $12.80 ( large), $7.80 (medium), $3.80 (small), from Ichiban Sushi, #06-05/06 Plaza Singapura, tel: 6837-0113; Ichiban Boshi, #02-13 Ngee Ann City, tel: 6735-1816 and Kuriya Japanese Fresh Fish Market, #B1-07 Great World City, tel: 6836-4910 Smooth, fluffy and moist, this was the unanimous favourite. It wasn’t overpoweringly cheesy or creamy and had just the right level of sweetness. It had a slightly citrusy flavour, which made it quite refreshing. 4 JOHAN PARIS MINI CHEESECAKE $3.50 for 100g, from Johan Paris, #B2-01 Westgate, tel: 6465-9926 Vastly different from the rest, these mini-cheesecakes were dry with a brownie-like texture. With their heavy cream-cheese centres and a slightly tangy aftertaste, they were more like American cheesecake. Some had a slightly burnt flavour. 5 BREADTALK JAPANESE CHEESECAKE $8.80, from Breadtalk We liked the light, spongy and moist texture, which was like that of chiffon cake. However, the mild cheese flavour did not make much of an impression.
