Prep First

Moisturise the skin around your eyes to create a smooth base for your makeup. If the area is dehydrated, your skin will appear cakey.

Brighten Dark Under-eye Circles

Apply concealer in a shade closest to your natural skin tone over the undereye area. Then dab a light yellow concealer over greyish areas (which your usual concealer may not be able to hide) – this highlights the skin and takes away the greyish cast, explains makeup artist Larry Yeo.

Conceal After Applying Base

Dab foundation over blemishes before using a concealer, says makeup artist Clarence Lee. The foundation gives blemishes some coverage so that you won’t have to apply too much concealer.

Skip the Upper Eyelids

Avoid using concealer on your upper eyelids as this can give you a heavy look and cause the concealer to crease, says Larry. The creasing will be even more obvious if you apply eye makeup after the concealer. Instead, use a makeup primer that is meant for the eye contours.

Use a Brush

Concealer will not adhere properly to your face if you apply it using your ngers, which also tend to pick up too much of it (read: product wastage!) and make skin look cakey. To apply it properly, squeeze some concealer onto the back of your hand, use a concealer brush to pick up the product a bit at a time, and lightly dab it over your under-eye circles. Then use your ring nger to lightly pat the concealer from the inner to the outer eye corners. Using your ngers at this stage helps to warm up and soften the concealer, making it easier to blend. To limit the amount of concealer you need, apply a touch of liquid foundation under the eyes rst, advises Larry.

Texture Rules

As the skin around the eyes tends to be dry, choose lightweight, creamy concealers that contain moisturising ingredients. A highly pigmented, opaque formula that gives high coverage can look too heavy under the eyes.
