We’re now halfway through the decade, imagine that. Does this inspire you to make bigger, more significant New Year’s resolutions than usual? Or are you quite happy with just a few simple goals?
I belong to the latter category. It’s been years since I made any “official” resolutions. I have a tendency to forget I made them, or declare such unattainable ones that they inevitably die a natural death.
In place of stating my “new year, new me” intentions to the world, I now choose just one small fix-it that would make me a better person. It’s usually the kind of thing I need to practise getting right, day after day.
One year, it dawned on me how much debt I had chalked up, simply from owing colleagues for drinks and treats they’d buy in for me while I worked through lunch, or plain forgetting to fork out my share of the meal at gatherings with friends. No one ever accused me of being a freeloader, but I felt terrible for being so inconsiderate.
I began making it a point to always have enough cash with me – in my wallet and at home. I started carrying my chequebook in my handbag. I try to pay up right away, or at group meals, I settle the bill first so everyone owes me money instead.
Whether you’re a traditionalist who must have a list of resolutions for the year, or a modernist like me, you’ll find there’s something in our January issue for everyone.
