Don’t be too quick to dis­miss sal­ads as pun­ish­ing bowls of bor­ing veg­gies. We pick four new ones that are healthy and sat­is­fy­ingly  avour­ful.

STAN­DARD NALU SALMON, FROM ALOHA POKE $15.90, 92 Amoy Street, tel: 6221- 6565.

Salad meets bara chi­rashi at this Telok Ayer shop, with two gen­er­ous scoops of salmon poke (the Hawai­ian ver­sion of tuna tar tare) over a base of brown rice, sushi rice and rocket leaves. Pome­gran­ate seeds, pineap­ple chunks, edamame, wal­nuts, al­monds, corn, and ebiko add tex­ture and colour. The sashimi lovers in our team couldn’t stop rav­ing about what an awe­some idea this poke bowl is. You can also ask to switch your poke to the spicy ver­sion.



Per­fect for those who pre­fer to pile on the pro­teins rather than the veg­gies. You get ten­der shreds of slow- roasted chicken ( yes, even the chicken breast is moist) and a Mex­i­can med­ley of beans, and we rel­ished the crunch and snap from the wal­nuts, cashews, sliced al­monds, broc­coli, as­para­gus spears and edamame.

You’ll ap­pre­ci­ate that the car­bo­hy­drates in this salad – roasted bell pep­pers and quinoa – rank low on the gly­caemic in­dex, so you’re less likely to suf­fer an en­ergy slump.

This place is no salad bar, but there is no lack of op­tions for your daily dose of greens. Up­stream is packed with kale and spinach, and served with a thick slab of wasabi- mar­i­nated salmon  llet. Thanks to the sous vide- then- grill treat­ment, the salmon is a per­fect pink with beau­ti­ful char marks. The house- made pick­led cu­cum­ber slices are an ad­dic­tive, re­fresh­ing con­trast to the umami avours, and sweet cubes of but­ter­nut squash and sweet pota­toes round up the salad.

Gua­camole is the name of the game at this salad bar opened by two av­o­cado devo­tees who aim to spread the word about the su­per­food’s health­ful proper ties. We love that this salad is ev­ery bit as hear ty as it sounds. The ro­maine let­tuce base is heaped with chunks of sweet potato, Ca­jun chicken cubes, lentils, tomato salsa, al­monds, and of course a gi­ant help­ing of gua­camole. It  lled us up!
