Yoga is prac­tised to re­duce symp­toms of asthma, and through ex­er­cise, breath­ing and med­i­ta­tion, also ben­e­fits those with a heart con­di­tion while al­le­vi­at­ing men­tal stress and anx­i­ety. Stud­ies have also shown it to be ef­fec­tive in con­trol­ling chronic lower back pain, with the ad­di­tional ben­e­fit of lesser use of painkillers. Nev­er­the­less, one should take care to learn from qual­i­fied and re­spon­si­ble in­struc­tors, as there have also been cases of prac­ti­tion­ers suf­fer­ing a range of sports in­juries, in­clud­ing torn lig­a­ments and spinal in­juries.
