Singapore Tatler - - BEHIND THE SCENES -

The Singapore Tatler team gets up-close and personal with former president Tony Tan Keng Yam

t is not every day you find yourself in a presidential suite with a former president. The Singapore Tatler team found ourselves ensconced in the swanky Four Seasons Hotel Singapore with Tony Tan Keng Yam for a very special 35th anniversary cover shoot, and just before the cameras started rolling, we screwed up the courage to ask a question (he later told us) no one had ever asked him before: “Dr Tan… do you think… we could try changing your hair parting?” We held our collective breaths. In the split second before he answered, you could have heard a pin drop. “Oh, no. Nobody would recognise me,” he replied, mild but firm. Something about the timing of his response and that gentle tone was so endearing that the team broke out into peals of laughter, relieved that our quest to create a striking portrait of Singapore’s seventh president had not been mistaken for impertinence. In any case, there is something to be said for a man who knows what he likes. Tan appeared in the first issue of Singapore Tatler in 1982 with the exact same slicked
