It’s Our 20th Birthday!

Singapore Women's Weekly (Singapore) - - EDITOR'S LETTER -

Wow… can you believe it? We are 20!

The Weekly has been in Singapore for two decades and over this time, I know we have become a brand you trust and count on. With a finger on the pulse of the needs, wants and goals of busy working women juggling both work and family life,

The Weekly has continued to stay true to its DNA, delivering stories and solutions to help you navigate through life’s challenges. Some people say the magazine is like their friend, and in fact, that was one of our aims when we first launched the title.

I’ve been privileged to see this baby grow up. She’s my middle child of sorts, and probably the one I’ve spent the most time with. I remember the day I started work, as the sub-editor, excited to be on a woman’s magazine. As with any launch of a new product, it took us months to get the October 1997 debut issue perfect. And just as we had finally sent the pages off to the printers, we heard of the tragic news of Princess Diana’s death. It was a stop-press moment and one I won’t forget; here was a princess who lived far, far away, yet many of us were shaken by the loss, and the team worked quickly to pull together a special tribute.

If there’s anything that stands out about The Weekly, it’s her big heart. We do what we do in hopes that each month, we can inspire you – to be happier, to be healthier, to be a better person. In this special 20th Anniversary issue, we feature over 60 amazing women who have come together in solidarity, via our pages, to empower you.

Catch up with the 18 high-achieving women in this year’s Great Women Of Our Time Awards, and we want you to vote for the most inspiring, page 50. Senior Features Writer Natalya Molok also tirelessly tracked down 20 powerful women who are empowering others in “20-20 Vision”, page 99, and you can tap on the career tips of our Great Women Of Our Time alumni on page 132. We also gathered some of our fave cover girls for a homecoming of sorts in “The Glam Squad”, page 22. It’s so great to see them looking beautiful, but more importantly, owning an air of assuredness that has come with time.

When we looked at who to feature as our cover girl for this issue, we dove into our archives and it was Wendy Jacobs, with baby Irfan, in her arms, who called out to us. So, we’re thrilled to have her grace our cover and have to say she’s as smokin’ hot as she was 20 years ago (if not even more!). Many would see Wendy as having the dream life, but it hasn’t been all a bed of roses for the South African model who came to Singapore and fell in love with our favourite footballing son Fandi Ahmad. Now with five children and having suffered a mysterious illness that almost claimed her life, Wendy shows she’s indeed a fighter – and embodies a spirit that we respect. Read more on page 32.

The Weekly has grown and evolved – our title is now available on tablet as well as online at www.womensweekly., giving women the choice to read our stories anytime and anywhere they like. We may change to meet your needs but we will continue to enable you through inspiration, solutions and memorable experiences. On behalf of the team, we thank you for all your support.
