The Peak Selections: Timepieces - - Off The Cuff -

Once a thriving centre of silver mining, Glashutte saw its fortunes reverse in the early 19th century, no thanks to the Napoleonic Wars and a flood of manufactured goods from a newly industrialised Britain. To stem this tide, the Saxon government began handing out loans to entrepreneurs. Savvy individuals like watchmaker Ferdinand Adolph Lange took advantage of this initiative and formed the town’s first watch manufacture in 1845, kick-starting its watchmaking industry.
