The Peak Selections: Timepieces - - Hit Series - Vernon Chua

Having been inducted into the world of horology by his watch enthusiast father and elder brother as a teenager, Vernon Chua was attracted to German brand Glashutte Original when he entered the workforce and was able to afford his own timepieces. The asset manager explains: “The brand is a connoisseur’s delight with rich history, thoughtful designs and honest marketing.”

As someone “who is happy being a little different”, the series that speaks most to him is the Pano family, with its signature off-centre dial design. He adds: “The Pano series is, in my mind, iconic for Glashutte Original, just like what the Royal Oak is for Audemars Piguet.”

Of the five Pano pieces he has, he singles out the PanoMaticLunar in steel as his favourite, pointing out that “the blue moonphase disc matches the blued steel hands impeccably, and they offer a flawless contrast against the silvered dial”. It also appeals to the fan of the moonphase complication. He says: “Some say that the moonphase is an impractical function, but I would argue that this could also apply to the hour and minutes. If you just need to know the time, a smartphone would serve you better, and you would not be reading this magazine.”
