THE APP LIFE

In a time when e-mail and Whatsapp have become primary channels of communication in the business world, technology is a double-edged sword that has accelerated the pace of interactions while reducing time for personal pursuits. Beyond instant messaging se

This year’s Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year award winners share their invaluable tech tips.

LINKEDIN

was the first app I downloaded. I still use it to connect with people and publish articles. I use social media to connect with my children and the next generation of workers.

WHATSAPP

is an easy form of communication. My dad is over 70 years old but uses it to talk to me. People are less receptive of Facebook Messenger because it seems to lack privacy.

Instagram.

I started using it because of my son. He takes nice photos and has 17,800 followers. I use it to better understand how the new generation thinks. It’s interactive and addictive.

Uber.

I drive in Singapore, but when I’m anywhere else, this helps me get around.

Spotify.

because I’m listening to music all the time. My mind is constantly thinking about work. Music, movies and my kids are the only things that can drown that out.

Facebook.

More than just a social media platform, I get more news from here than any other source.

WHATSAPP

is something I’ve come to realise that I almost cannot live without. We have so many regional offices. Whatsapp groups bring everyone together, who can then throw ideas into the group.

OUTLOOK EXPRESS

is more than just an e-mail service. It’s where we plot our calendars so that everyone can see where everybody is.

OVERDRIVE

leeches onto online libraries in the world and lets me read their books.

CARDSCAN makes it easy for me to digitise and organise business cards and documents. WECHAT is more usable than Whatsapp. When I lived in Guangzhou, I was neighbours with one of the Wechat founders. I asked him why he wanted to go into payments with Wechat, and he promised me that, soon, Wechat would be so much more than just a messaging service. ONEDRIVE allows me to store and retrieve documents while I’m on the move.

Skype. It is an app I rely on for video calls outside of China.

Whatsapp. I use more when communicating with Singaporeans.
