Torque (Singapore) - - CONTENTS - DAVID TING davidt@sph.com.sg

Immediately after I thought of the above topic for this page, the command “Single column! Single column!” popped into my head. It came from the Colosseum scene in Gladiator where Maximus, played by Russell Crowe, orders his barbarian horde to adopt a left-right singlecolumn formation and eventually defeat the Roman legionaries in the re-enacted battle of Carthage. Anyway!... This issue sees the debut of two new columns – Jeet Engine (pg 24) by Sarjeet Singh, and Internal Kongbustion (pg 26) by Dr Kong Yongyao.

Both columnists are petrolheads, of course, and they are also essential members of the power-packed dream team in Torque’s 12-cylinder/writer engine room.

Interestingly (to me at least), I wrote my very first editor’s page 20 years ago in 1998 for a now defunct motoring magazine.

That column’s last line is still applicable after 240 months – “I am glad to be an enthusiastic fellow compatriot in this extraordinary national love affair with cars.”
