GOLFING IN THE COUNTRYSIDE
It is fitting that Volkswagen picked Austria to launch the new third-generation Touareg. The Touareg may be Volkswagen’s most famous SUV, but it is not the first. The first VW SUV was the one-off, jacked-up, fourwheel-drive, off-road version of Golf called Golf Country, produced in 1990 and 1991.
And the Golf Country has an Austrian connection – the regular Golfs were sent from VW’s German plant to Graz, Austria where they were fitted with fourwheel-drive gears by Austrian vehicle manufacturer Steyr-Daimler-Puch. Some 7700 units of the car were produced.
