By day, Kuro Iza­kaya is a ra­men-don­buri shop. By night, it trans­forms into a gas­tro-bar cosily lit by furoshiki-in­spired lanterns. The glass-lined con­tem­po­rary restau­rant, framed by tan­ta­lis­ing rows of Ja­panese whisky, sake and shochu, serves up re­fresh­ing mock­tails, clas­sic cock­tails and sea­sonal whisky tast­ing flights.

For nib­bles, we love their spe­cial­ity Kuro kushiyaki plat­ter ($36 for 12 pieces) com­pris­ing ba­con-wrapped enoki, ho­tate (scal­lop) ba­con, chicken yak­i­tori, grilled king oys­ter mush­room and kurobuta pork on skew­ers. Other must-try items in­clude on­sen tam­ago ($8), a poached egg seated atop a bed of shi­rataki noo­dles adorned with yuzu peel, wasabi, ikura and baby cress; and smoked ajit­suke tam­ago ($8), a hick­ory smoked egg with a runny yolk cen­tre with Hokkaido potato salad.
