Shun­juu Iza­kaya


This cosy and un­pre­ten­tious iza­kaya along Robert­son Quay has been around for 15 years and con­tin­ues to at­tract crowds with its con­sis­tently good sumiyaki (char­coal grilled) dishes and wide se­lec­tion of sake.

Don’t be over­whelmed by the ex­ten­sive menu fea­tur­ing over 70 items. Start with some fresh sashimi like the sword­fish belly, boast­ing sweet flavours and a nice firm tex­ture, be­fore mov­ing on to the cold and hot ap­pe­tis­ers. Sig­na­ture items like dried puffer fish, oys­ter omelette and beef carpaccio of­fer a wealth of flavours and tex­tures. Wash them down with sake or Asahi beer be­fore work­ing your way through the de­li­cious flamed items. Must-tries in­clude the oys­ters with sweet miso sauce, fea­tur­ing plump fresh bi­valves blan­keted in a de­li­cious sauce; ebi shio, suc­cu­lent king prawn sea­soned with salt and but­ter; and the sig­na­ture chicken wings with taut, thin skin that yields a snap upon first bite and un­veils juicy, suc­cu­lent flesh.

Other no­table high­lights in­clude scal­lop rolled with pork and Ja­panese mack­erel with plum. If you love or­gan meats, you’ll want to try the ox tongue, foie gras, chicken heart and chicken giz­zard, which are all grilled to per­fect done­ness.
