Panerai’s Luminor 8 Days Set is a neat haveall for collectors

It’s a tasty bit of Panerai history that collectors will find hard to resist, especially when there are just 500 of these boxed watch sets to go around. Though the original company was founded in 1860, Panerai had just begun to produce watches for the general public in 1993, riding on its legendary heritage centred around supplying diving instruments and watches to the Italian Navy from the 1900s to the 1930s. In 1996, just a year before it was acquired by its present owners, the Richemont group, it produced a small run of watches commissioned by Sylvester Stallone. These are the inspiration for the pair of watches presented here: the Luminor Black Seal and the Luminor Daylight. The former, in 44mm steel case with DLC coating, is presented for the first time in a left-handed version; while the latter, in polished 44mm steel case, sports a rare combination of white dial with blue markers and numerals.

Water resistant to 300m, both watches are powered by the manual-winding P.5000 manufacture movement, which boasts an exceptional power reserve of at least eight days, courtesy of the movement’s dual barrels connected in series. In this way, the P.5000 establishes a connection to manual-winding, long power reserve movements of Panerai’s past. Moreover, the movement has also been designed to be very robust, benefiting from generously sized bridges, and a balance bridge, anchored on two points.

The rest of the package sweetens the deal further. Housing the two watches is a wooden box made of pear wood, with a teak base, inspired by the wooden boxes that vintage Luminors were sold in. Also included is a model of a human torpedo used to deploy combat divers of the Italian Navy in days past; a book that details equipment used by the special forces of the Italian Navy, including Panerai watches and instruments; as well as a spare strap for each watch, and a screwdriver.

It is a delectable, thoughtful package containing watches that express Panerai’s signature elegant hardiness as well as can be. Question is, will they stay in the pretty box, or will they live more days on one’s wrist? MOVEMENT Manual-winding P.5000 with eight-day power reserve
