Vacheron Constantin’s Overseas Ultra-thin Perpetual Calendar

There are a few golden rules to savvy travelling and one of them is to pack light but pack well. You can apply this rule to everything on you, from your suitcase to your shoes and, of course, your watch. Just as how bulky luggage is never a welcome thought, an oversized watch has no business tagging along on the flight. For one, it’s practically begging for scratches in the confined spaces of a cabin.

In lieu of a scratchproof timepiece, itinerant watch aficionados could consider one with an ultra-thin case that slips easily under the cuff of your cashmere sweater or silk pyjamas, such as the new Vacheron Constantin Overseas Ultra-thin Perpetual Calendar. Need another reason? This is the Vacheron Constantin collection dedicated to the world of travel and it had recently undergone a massive revamp, the first since its introduction in 1996, which makes it a relatively young watch. The Overseas collection is Vacheron Constantin’s take on casual elegance in watchmaking, but the judicious can see immediately that by “casual elegance”, the manufacture meant heavy on the “elegance” and (next to) zero on the “casual”. That, or this is the kind of casual elegance society’s uppermost echelons are used to.

One of the collection’s most recognisable traits is the bezel with six crenellations, rounded and alternatingly polished and satinbrushed. Sitting atop a monobloc case middle with integrated lugs, it frames the watch’s silvered dial and draws attention to the contents of its sub-dials where the perpetual calendar displays have been neatly arranged. Accurate until the year 2100, it is accompanied by a moon phase display that echoes the chic modernity of the watch’s typeface and blue-grey colour palette. The movement that perpetuates this activity is the Calibre 1120 QP measuring just 4.05mm in height. Oscillating at a frequency of 19,800vph, this self-winding movement, like all Vacheron Constantin mechanical movements since 1901, is stamped with the prestigious Geneva Seal, which means that both its precision and finishing are beyond reproach. Get the full picture through the sapphire crystal case back.

The Overseas Ultra-thin Perpetual Calendar is also an impressive sight on the outside, predominantly its case profile measuring only 8.1mm. Considering that it houses a self-winding movement made up of 276 components, one of which is a 22K gold finely decorated rotor, one would be hard-pressed to not give it due credit. Like all of the other new Overseas models unveiled this year, this one is fitted with an interchangeable bracelet complete with the new easy-fit system that allows the wearer to extend the bracelet by a few millimetres quickly and easily. Additionally, leather and rubber straps are delivered with the watch to be changed at will.
