It may be a little while yet before we see the first flying car, but driverless cars are already here. At the Consumer Electronics Show 2015 in Las Vegas last month, Mercedes unveiled its new self-driving concept car, bringing us one step closer to the world of tomorrow.
The futuristic F015 concept car features autonomous systems and a digital living space, among other advanced technologies. It is also equipped with high-tech 3D cameras and sensors that will constantly monitor the environment. At the driver’s instruction, the car will begin moving. In self-driving mode, the steering wheel automatically retracts into the dashboard and the driver is free to, well, do anything but drive.
The cruise control system, which maintains a safe distance between cars, is already a standard feature in some higher-end cars, but the F015 takes it further. It can “sense” if a pedestrian is standing by the side of the road, waiting to cross it; after gauging if the conditions are safe to do so, the car will come to a stop and project a zebra crossing from its laser system onto the road, and an audible “please go ahead” message is played through the car’s external speakers to direct pedestrians to cross the road.
Additionally, the LED headlights turn blue in self-driving mode and turn white during manual driving, as a signal to outsiders what mode the car is on. These new technologies will be featured in future Mercedes cars.
Apart from the ability to self-drive, the exterior design of the F015 exudes luxury and sophistication. At 5,220mm long, 2,018mm wide and 1,524mm high, the car is ample and built mainly from carbon fiber-reinforced plastic, aluminium and high-strength steel. It is 40 per cent lighter than the current models of cars that use only aluminium and high-strength steel.
The F015 concept car has a unique oval-shaped mono-box design. Doors open at up to 90 degrees, which makes getting in and out especially easy. The four lounge chairs can face forward, but the front seats can rotate 180 degrees to face the back-seat passengers when the car is in self-driving mode. The materials used to build the cabin include walnut wood, nappa leather, glass and metal. Six LCD displays are installed inside which can be operated by gestures, touch and even eye movement.
The F015 is powered by a plug-in hydrogen fuel cell and two electric motors that deliver 268bhp horsepower. The car has a range of 1,100km including 200km of battery-powered driving and 900km on the electricity from the fuel cell. The two motors in the rear axle can each generate 134bhp horsepower and 199Nm torque force and each powers a rear wheel. The entire power system can reach the highest horsepower of 268bhp and 399Nm torque force, and it can accelerate from zero to 100kmh in 6.7 seconds, with a maximum speed of 200kmh.
What is wonderful is that the lithium-ion batteries can be charged via inductive coils, which means messy cables will be a thing of the past.
The F015 concept car is no doubt the intelligent vehicle we have all been waiting for. 赛地上个月在美国拉斯维加斯举行的2015年国际消费电子展(CES)上，发布全新研发可自动驾驶的F015 Luxury in Motion概念车，进一步缩短了我们与未来的距离。
