Life In A Rainbow
The bold polka dot-covered works of Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama are now putting in an appearance at the National Gallery Singapore in the artist’s first South-east Asian show. The exhibition will showcase her works dating from the 1950s to the present day and will feature paintings, sculptures, videos and art installations, including some that have never been shown before. Kusama is widely regarded as the most influential avant-garde artist in contemporary times and her works have become the focus of intense interest at art auctions in recent years. In 2014, one of the works from her Infinity Nets series sold for US$7.1 million (S$9.2 million) at a Christie’s auction in Hong Kong, cementing her position at the pinnacle of living female artists. The public love her just as much: Her 2015 retrospective, In Infinity, was the best-attended exhibition in the world for that year. Her South-east Asian tour is expected to meet with the same level of enthusiasm. And her reach extends beyond the world of art. Case in point: Her collaboration with French luxury house Louis Vuitton, in which her signature bold spots covered items from bags to dresses. Kusama was plagued by mental illness in her younger years and now, at 88, lives a life of seclusion, shuttling between her nursing home and her studio every day. Her art keeps her connected to the outside world and is also her greatest motivation.
