ailed as one of the most exciting additions to New York’s skyline in years, the upcoming 53W53 Manhattan luxury condo adjacent to the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) is the joint product of several heavyweights.
Known also as the MoMA Expansion Tower and 53 West 53rd Street, it is developed by global real estate concern Hines, Singapore’s Pontiac Land Group and Goldman Sachs. Other bold-faced names involved in turning the project from blueprint to building include top French architects Jean Nouvel and Thierry Despont. Pritzker Prize winner Nouvel designed the 82-storey skyscraper, while Despont is in charge of the interior design. Nouvel is the man behind several eye-catching buildings around the world, such as the Torre Agbar in Barcelona, the Doha Tower in Qatar and the DR Koncerthuset in Copenhagen. Despont, on the other hand, has done up interior spaces for the likes of Bill Gates and Calvin Klein.
Nouvel has chosen to use a diagrid — a sculptural, exposed structural system — for the 320m-tall tapered tower that comprises 145 residential units, gallery space, a restaurant and a wellness centre, among other facilities. Thanks to his clever design, each unit is unique and spacious, with stunning views of the city skyline.
Hines’ managing director David Penick told ZBBZ in an interview this is the third time his firm is working with Nouvel. “He is one of the most talented architects in contemporary times and his design style is a perfect fit for our project,” Penick said. “He designs each and every building based on its surroundings.
