Botswana FA distances itself from rape accuser

African Times - - News -

THE Botswana Football Association has distanced itself from the woman who accused a prominent Limpopo government official of rape.

The association’s Chief Executive Officer Mfolo E. Mfolo said on Monday that the rape had nothing to do with them and the Botswana soccer national team, the Zebras.

This came after media reports over the weekend alleged that the make-up artist was part of the Zebras’ Cosafa delegation and also a volunteer to the tournament.

Mfolo said while his association did not condone any form of abuse or violence carried out against women, it had noted with concern reports of a Motswana woman who was said to have been raped at the tournament.

“The aforesaid woman is rumoured to be a backroom staff and a volunteer from Botswana. Let it be on record that the Zebras does not have any backroom staff member who is female and we have not received any report of any of its female delegation who has been raped. We would like to distance the team from these allegations,” read the statement.

“The only female personnel associated with the Zebras is the media liaison who is safe and continues to enjoy good health.”

Mfolo added that in an effort to empower local communities, the Cosafa organisation committee gets volunteers from the host country.

“Henceforth we denounce the individual alleging to have been raped as having an official capacity from Botswana.”

The woman confirmed to African Times that she was neither part of the Zebras’ delegation nor a Botswana volunteer to the tournament.

She said she came to the games to assist one of the service providers who rendered make up services.

“That’s not true. I am a makeup artist. So, there was a lady from Supersport who was doing a magazine [show]. And I am freelancer. She needed me to do make up for people she was there to interview to compile a magazine,” She said.

“Even members of the Botswana Football federation came to the police station to see me. They said they heard I was from Botswana and I told them I was not part of their delegation. They said okay. I was not travelling with them.”

The make-up artist said she was based in Joburg. Her friend in Botswana described the rape accuser as a smart woman.

“She is very smart. She is very intelligent,” said the associate.
