Limpopo Police are investigating a fire that killed two children, aged six and 15, after their hostel caught fire and burnt to the ground with them inside.

The incident happened on Monday night in Motetema outside Groblersdal. Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Moatse Ngoepe says when community members noticed fire flames on top of Makaepea Primary School they quickly alerted the police who responded promptly to douse the blaze.

They immediately launched their investigations into the cause of the inferno but did not suspect any foul play.

“We have opened two counts of inquest following the deaths of these leaners that perished in the fire,” said Colonel Ngoepe in a statement.

When asked why the children were still at the hostel during school holidays, he said that it was not clear.

“I am not clear of the whereabouts of the other children because the schools are closed. Our investigations will come up with the other details. We only found the bodies of the two children at the burnt hostel so far.”

The children have not yet been identified.

“The cause of the fire which led to the death of these two children is still unknown but the on-going Police investigations will tell,” said Ngoepe. The Limpopo Education Department could not be reached
