nation to commit a criminal act. I don’t think we should allow Parliament to degenerate into a platform where wrong acts can be called to happen by those of us who sit in the house.”

Mthembu also dismissed perceptions the ANC was following the EFF’s agenda. “Did we really follow the EFF? I would say ‘No’ we did not. What did the EFF want”? They wanted us to create a committee to look at Section 25 of the Constitution and change it and the ANC said ‘No’. I don’t know who was following who because we did not follow the EFF.”

On calls by the DA for an inquiry into the suitability public protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane for her job, Mthembu said the ANC would not go against the Act that had created her office. “Anyone who wants to remove public protector must prove the public protector is incompetent and show through evidence she is unable to run that office.”

The ANC would support any proven evidence that “the person we have here is just incompetent but we must still prove that the person is incompetent”.

On the past six months, he said: “The first the first half of this year in Parliament has been nothing but extraordinary.”
