Bicycling (South Africa) - - FIT CHICK -

In 2016, I was preparing for a track-racing competition. There were three races that I thought I had a chance to medal in: the points race, sprint tournament, and 500metre time trial. From May to September, I connected nearly every training session to the way I wanted to ride in that competition, visualising the effort, speed, and persistence I wanted to achieve in those races as I pedalled. It pushed me harder. I wasn’t just rolling around the track with my legs burning for the fun of it – I was flying into the finish for the win. Every time I sprinted, I could feel my opponents on my hip, sometimes nipping me at the line. I practised pushing through fatigue, because that’s what it would feel like on my third straight day of racing. At the competition, it all felt familiar. I was physically and mentally ready for the intensity of competing. And all my months of visualisation paid off: I went home with three medals. – Riley Missel, editorial assistant
