New estate in the mountains
Michelle Funke finds out more about a new Drakensberg estate
VULINTABA, a Zulu word meaning “Open the mountain”, is the name of a new country estate being developed in KwaZuluNatal’s far northern Drakensberg region near Newcastle. For those wishing to retire, those who wish to raise children in a safe environment or those who just need a tranquil home away from home, Vulintaba Country Estate is well worth investment consideration.
Snuggled in a small amphitheatre in the foothills of the Drakensberg range, the estate spans over 4,000ha of pristine mountain and valley land.
The architects and designers of the Vulintaba Country Estate have ensured that each residence has its own special view. The variety of sites are designed to maximise the views of the mountains, trout fishing streams or the golf course.
Land purchase options are divided into various phases. Smaller properties are located at the main entrance where just 40 stands are available ranging 300m² to 500m². There are 38 available stands located above the old Club House which generally measure around 1,000m² or more and enjoy lovely views over the golf course. A further 38 stands are available on the western slopes of the mountain which offer views over large parts of the mountain and the golf course. Sizes range from 900m² to 1,100m². On the northern slopes of the mountain, the 42 available stands, which range in size from 1,000m² to 1,400m², afford long views over the whole estate and the course.
The architectural style for Vulintaba Country Estate derives its elements and features from early homestead architecture, which was very prominent in the Cape Colonial and the Natal Victorian Veranda architecture. Whether investing in just the land or a total home package, investors need to bear in mind that the house designs are to be approached by using these proportions as a base to work from. A number of plot and home-plan packages have been specifically designed for Vulintaba by the lead architect, Solli Venter, from The Edge Architects.
These designs are available in two architectural styles — Traditional Farm House Style for a charming country feel, or the Contemporary Farm House Style with more modern elements — both in two and three bedrooms with the option of adding a loft.
Home sizes range from approximately 190m² to 260m².
At Vulintaba there is a great emphasis on outdoor activities, from the hiking and walking trails and the 9-hole golf course and driving range to the mountain bike trails, fly fishing, horse riding, bird watching and more.
The estate is also set to include a hotel, spa and resort component which will be built around the main entrance. It will be made up of a hotel complex of 80 rooms, 40 of which will form part of the main building with the balance consisting of time-share lodges. An indoor spa and wellness centre will be housed in the main building along with a conference centre. The hotel will cater to the wedding market and an intimate chapel will be built. The hotel will also have boutique shopping facilities and a restaurant and will link into the various sport and recreational facilities available on the estate.
