Bakkie talks the talk

Ford has announced that its Sync infotainment system is now available for its Ranger

THESE days a bakkie is not quite the simple thing it once was. There was a time when all that mattered was how easy the seats were to clean, how big the payload was and how much torque the engine produced. Today, it is all very different with people discussing the quality of the leather, how useful cruise control is and whether they can connect their phone. Payload and power are still just as important, but suddenly there is styling and infotainment to think about.

Ford has certainly done a great deal to meet styling expectations and now it is taking infotainment to a new level too with the inclusion of its Sync infotainment system.

Using hands-free technology, customers are able to connect almost any cellphone or digital media player to the vehicle’s multimedia system via Bluetooth or USB connection. By means of simple voice commands or the controls mounted on the steering wheel, drivers are able to manage the system’s range of features, from selecting contacts and making calls to choosing an artist or track.

“Ford Sync has revolutionised the way drivers interact with their vehicles, providing intuitive and convenient control of the in-car communications and entertainment features,” said Tracey Delate, Ford Motor Company Southern Africa marketing manager.

“The system makes an important contribution to driving safety by allowing the driver to focus on the road while using voice commands for a range of functions.

“By introducing Sync to the Ranger XLS, XLT and Wildtrak models at no additional cost, we are making the technology more accessible and ensuring that the Ranger stands out even further from the competition,” Delate says.

The system responds to and recognises up to 150 different voice commands, can store up to 12 cellphones and hold up to 1,000 contacts per paired phone — all of which can be dialled by voice.

On the music front, using the Voice Control function allows users to select artist, album, individual tracks, genre or playlists by their titles, providing much easier control of music choices.

The Sync system adds numerous infotainment options to the Ford Ranger.
