Ipid in­ves­ti­gate shoot­ing of Hout Bay boy, 14

THE IN­DE­PEN­DENT Po­lice In­ves­tiga­tive Direc­torate (Ipid) is in­ves­ti­gat­ing a case of at­tempted mur­der af­ter a 14-year-old boy was shot by po­lice dur­ing on­go­ing protests in Hout Bay.

Yes­ter­day Hang­berg pro­test­ers clashed with po­lice for a third day. Dis­grun­tled res­i­dents protested over the de­creased al­lo­ca­tion of fish­ing quo­tas and lack of ser­vices in the com­mu­nity.

On Tues­day, Ona Dubula from Imizamo Yethu was al­legedly shot by an of­fi­cer at close range while hid­ing be­hind a bar­ri­cade. He is re­cov­er­ing af­ter surgery to re­move a rub­ber bul­let from un­der his tongue.

“Ipid be­came aware of the in­ci­dent as the video footage cir­cu­lated on so­cial me­dia. The shoot­ing was not re­ported to the Ipid as re­quired by the Ipid Act,” said Ipid na­tional spokesper­son Moses Dlamini.

“Ipid in­ves­ti­ga­tors vis­ited the mother of the vic­tim and ob­tained her state­ment.”
