Digitised ID system on track – Gigaba

-

DESPITE a constrained budget, Home Affairs Minister Malusi Gigaba said his department remained geared towards full digitisation of the national identification database.

Gigaba launched the automated biometric identification system (ABIS), which is set to replace the old database. “The integrated multi-modal biometric system, ABIS, is at the cutting edge of building new, digital national identification system,” he said in a media briefing ahead of tabling his budget vote in Parliament.

“The ABIS allows us to take various forms of your identity, your palm print, your footprint, and soon we will be taking DNA and having a DNA database.”

Gigaba said the aim was to bring South Africa on par with some of the more advanced countries in the world. – African News Agency (ANA)
