at festivals or where people book the show. I have never had a full theatre run with any of my shows. Then Kosie of Kosie House of Theatre came to me with the suggestion that he produces a run at Montecasino for me. The only request was that I do a show which cannot be seen anywhere else. And so we came up with the idea of Marion Holm vir Beginners.

Would you describe yourself as a comedian – or would you prefer a different description?

I am most definitely not a comedian; I do not have the guts those people have! I am an actress and I am simply creating work for myself. And when you create your own work you use the ingredients that you have available which in this case is me, my life and my acting abilities which include comedy and storytelling.

What else have you been up to?

I am performing my latest one woman show all over SA wherever people will pay me R3 and a hotdog. The show is called Die Kaap is Weer Holms. I also played a character called Dot in a TV series Vlug na Egipte and the sequel Terug na Egipte, which was broadcast earlier this year.

Will English-speaking audiences be able to follow the show quite easily?

It depends – if you really do not understand Afrikaans at all then no, you won’t follow. But if you have a

I admire actors who are not simply playing themselves. Sean Penn playing Harvey Milk is a very good example of such brilliant acting, which I admire. But that is on-screen acting. On stage I admire people like Nicole Holm, Antoinette Kellermann, Chris Vorster, Albert Maritz, Albert Pretorius, Marius Weyers and many more South African actors.

What was the last live performance you saw, and how did you find it?

The last live performance I saw was Cabaret at the Fugard Theatre and I enjoyed it very much. What do you do to relax? Read – I thing I am addicted to reading. I also love watching TV series on DVD. Like Monk or The Mentalist or Bones.

Marion Holm Vir Beginners is at Theatre on the Bay from August 12 to 22. Book 021 438 3300.
