- Staff Writer

A KHAYELITSHA animal hospital celebrated the completion of the first phase of their intensive sterilisation campaign – “Alpha Impact” – the largest area-specific and goal-driven campaign of its kind ever to have taken place on the African continent.

To capture this milestone by SA.MAST (South African Mass Animal Sterilisation Trust), internationally acclaimed graffiti artist Mak1One will be transforming the entire exterior surface of the hospital into an iconic work of art.

SA.MAST is permanently located in the heart of Khayelitsha and to date has sterilised, vaccinated, and treated for internal and external parasites, about 12 000 animals in the area.

According to its website the provision of an animal ambulance, hospital for the sick and injured, massive kennel building and distribution programme, and other community empowerment initiatives where they’re most needed, is their contribution to the country.

SA.MAST is also be celebrating:

An estimated 70 to 80 percent mass sterilisation and primary treatment coverage rate achieved for all of Khayelitsha.

More than 12 000 patients collected, sterilised, vaccinated, treated for parasites and returned to their homes, whether a shack or RDP house, for free.

The initiation of the second phase for 2017, Clean Sweep, to seek out any new or missed animals.

The planning of phase three, called New Dawn, in 2018, which will see SA.MAST move their campaign into neighbouring informal settlements, extending the mass sterilisation, primary treatment and humane education corridor.

The vision, determination and compassion of their dedicated team, as well as Khayelitsha residents and the generosity of individual and corporate donors.

The first open day for their new hospital established in 2015, with enlarged canine and feline wards, consultation rooms and surgery to treat sick or injured animals.

When asked why he chose to collaborate with SA.MAST, Mak1One said: “SA.MAST has risen to the challenges that were set in 1994.

“Their actions, the relationship they have with the Khayelitsha community and the partnerships they have with the broader South African and international community, are a visible reflection of the words spoken by Archbishop Desmond Tutu when he said ‘My humanity is bound up in yours, for we can only be human together.’ ”
