South Africans looking to buy a light crossover/ SUV are spoilt for choice … and Honda SA has just made that decision-making process even more difficult. The Mobilio-based BR-V is the third SUV on offer from the Japanese maker and it shares the design cues seen on siblings CR-V and HR-V.

All BR-V models are powered by Honda’s familiar 1,5-litre petrol engine. The four-cylinder unit produces 88 kw, with a torque peak of 145 N.m at 4 600 r/min. BR-V buyers can choose between a six-speed manual gearbox and a CVT.

The newcomer has a wheelbase that is longer than that of the CR-V, which allows for the fitment of a third row of seats, providing occupancy for seven. The middle and rear rows can be stowed for added versatility.

BR-V models are well specced, with the entrylevel Trend offering air-conditioning, electric windows, remote keyless entry, power-assisted steering and a four-speaker audio system with ipod/usb/bluetooth connectivity. The more upmarket Comfort and Elegance models add even more luxury and convenience features.

Active and passive safety concerns are addressed with ABS, dual front airbags, inertiareel seat belts for all but the second-row centre seating position, which has a lap belt, and head restraints for all occupants.

All BR-V models come with a five-year/ 200 000 km warranty and a two-year/30 000 km service plan.
