BMW 5 SERIES
Priced from R780 156
BMW looks set to shake up the local executivesedan market with the all-new 5 Series. With a drag coefficient of just 0,22, it is the most aerodynamically efficient car BMW has ever released. Not only have there been great strides made in terms of air flow, but the G30 5 Series has also gone on a strict diet, making use of lightweight materials such as aluminium and magnesium. Improved aero and lower overall mass, of course, also help both with the dynamics and fuel consumption.
Speaking of fuel, four models will initially make up the local range. A 520d (140 kw/ 350 N.m) and 530d (195 kw/620 N.m) comprise the diesel side of the family, while a 530i (185 kw/350 N.m) and 540i (250 kw/450 N.m) are the petrol siblings. All engines in the range are turbocharged and mated with an eightspeed automatic transmission.
The new 5 rides on double-wishbone front suspension, with a five-link arrangement doing duty on the rear. For the first time, this model will offer Integral Active Steering, which moves the rear wheels in the same or opposite direction to the fronts to create a feeling of agility at low speeds and stability at higher velocities. As per all new BMWS, a manufacturer warranty and comprehensive maintenance contract are included in the price.
