AUTONOMOUS TRUCK SAFETY

Car (South Africa) - - TECH -

A fully loaded 18-wheeler truck travelling at 100 km/h has enough kinetic energy to easily flatten a row of stationary vehicles. Good news is that WABCO Holdings Inc. (braking system) and ZF Friedrichshafen AG (steering system) received a CLEPA award for their joint development of Evasive Manoeuvre Assist, a breakthrough collisionavoidance system for commercial vehicles. Radar detects stationary traffic on the motorway and, if the autonomous collision braking is not enough to avoid an accident, the vehicle steers itself round the obstacle when the driver fails to react. This shows the building blocks for autonomous trucks are slowly being put in place.
