BMW has finally lopped the top o its striking hybrid sportscar...
…and the result is stunning. Sharing its launch with that of the updated i8 Coupé, the Roadster utilises its sibling’s carbon-fibre and aluminium hybrid architecture. In echoes of the coupé, the Roadster adopts gullwing doors but drops the solid roof in favour of a double-layered canvas unit that folds electrically into a daringly styled rear deck. As part of the update, the i8’s powertrain has been worked on, with the mid-mounted battery array getting a bump from 20 to 34 Ah. This improvement extracts an additional 9 kw from the electric motor and contributes to an all-electric operating range of 53 km (55 km for the coupé). With 275 kw on tap, the Roadster completes the 0-100 km/h sprint in 4,6 seconds, while the Coupé slashes that figure down to 4,4 seconds. Fuel consumption stands at 2,1 L/100 km for the Roadster and 1,9 L/100 km for the fixed-head model.
