A beady eye on art
Liza Lou is a US artist who is based in South Africa. She uses intricate beadwork to recreate ordinary objects, The result is an intricate piece of art that makes you view the mundane in a new light.
Lou started her beading project after visiting South Africa in 2005. She now employs 25 artisans from KwaZulu-Natal to actualise her creations. Her latest exhibition, Canvas, takes the surface normally accepted as the ground for art and turns it into a piece in itself. Each “canvas” is created by thousands of intricate off-white and brown beads. We love how Lou is involving South African women, and the meticulous detail of her work is something to behold.
