Kroonstad crooner hits Hollywood
Levy Sekgapane from Kroonstad in the Free State will feature in a new Hollywood production as hunky actor Denzel Whitaker’s piano-playing double.
Sekgapane hit a showbiz high note when a friend invited him to play the piano in Back to School Mom, a drama recently filmed in Stellenbosch.
The 27-year-old opera student also got to rub shoulders with acting heavyweights Kimberly Elise, who starred in The Diary of a Mad Black Woman, Rick Fox of Meet the Browns and Harry Lennix, who featured in the TV series Dollhouse.
Sekgapane’s music will be included on the movie’s soundtrack and composed by Grammy-winning jazz pianist and record producer Robert Glasper, and fellow American music industry veteran Derrick Hodge.
He told City Press: “I was the piano double for the role Noah played by Denzel Whitaker, because he cannot play the piano.
“I had to learn two new pieces, not classical but sort of contemporary pop, the night before the shoot.”
Sekgapane said security on the film’s sets was tight and photographs were strictly prohibited.
The tenor – a student at the UCT Opera School – is just back from participating in Anamchara, a part of the Glasgow 2014 Cultural Programme in Scotland.
He will feature as Libensk of in the opera Il Viaggio a Reims, which will run at Cape Town’s Baxter Theatre from Tuesday until Saturday.
“I’m so excited to take part in the revival of this magical piece by my favourite composer, Rossini,” he says.
