Tiger’s health still not on par

US golfer Tiger Woods continues to experience a woeful season due to his back injury.

The former world number one this week withdrew from yet another high-profile event when he ruled himself unavailable for the 2014 US Ryder Cup team.

The biennial tournament, one of the highlights of the season, sees the European and US sides competing at Gleneagles on the Jack Nicklaus-designed Centenary Course in Pertshire, Scotland, from September 2 to 7.

But Woods will not be seen wearing his country’s colours due to his current health situation.

This week, he shocked the golfing world when he informed the PGA of America and the US team captain Tom Watson that he would not be available. “While I greatly appreciate Tom [Watson] thinking about me for a possible captain’s pick, I must take myself out of consideration,” he was quoted as saying.

This has been arguably the worst year on the course for Woods, who has been in search of winning his 15th major this year, since he underwent back surgery in March.

That forced him to miss the Masters at Augusta National Golf Course in Georgia, US, for the first time in his glittering career.

He then sidestepped another major – the US Open at Pinehurst No 2, North Carolina, in June – due to his back problem.

At the British Open at the Royal Liverpool Golf Club in Liverpool, England, last month, he tried but posted horrible scores of 69 77 73 to finish three over par.

At the last major of the year – the PGA Championship played at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky, earlier this month – Woods’ downward spiral continued as he quit after playing two rounds.

Having appeared on seven Ryder Cup teams between 1997 and 2012, his injury must be particularly worrisome.

“I have been told by my doctors and trainer that my back muscles need to be rehabilitated and healed. I’m extremely disappointed that I won’t be ready for the [Ryder Cup],” Woods was quoted as saying this week.
