We must support our legends

Pule “Iniesta” Jakkals

As a Kaizer Chiefs supporter, I write this letter with a heavy heart regarding Nelson “Teenage” Dladla, also known as “uMgabadeli”.

I really felt a huge pain in my heart when I heard he has joined Mamelodi Sundowns after Chiefs failed to offer him a job within the club’s structures.

The legend served Chiefs with great dedication and selflessness. He spent his entire playing career making sure Chiefs became the success it is today.

Ewert “The Lip” Nene lost his life while on a mission to get Dladla to don the famous gold-and-black jersey.

I am aware it is highly impossible for the club to employ all its former players, but Teenage deserves more as he was a special kind of player.

In fact, Kaizer Motaung owes it to Teenage to give him a directorship at the club.

But now the man finds himself at Mamelodi Sundowns, thanks to Patrice Motsepe’s generosity. But I doubt his heart is even there, as he never played for Sundowns.

I’m sure Nene is turning in his grave to see how the club he died for turned its back on one of its best – if not the greatest – players.

This doesn’t sit well with me as a Chiefs supporter. Our teams need to take a leaf out of clubs like Bayern Munich, Barcelona, AC Milan and Real Madrid’s book as they appreciate and use their former great players by putting them in key strategic positions.

I beg Motaung to go to Sundowns and bring Teenage back because when I see him, I see Chiefs and not Downs or any other club.

Even the fact that a guy like Malombo Lechaba, who served Chiefs with great aplomb, is at Sundowns instead of Chiefs. This makes me sad and angry.

Our development structures at Chiefs need people like him and our former captain Howard “The Rock” Freeze, who has expertise in youth football development research.

My letter is not meant as an attack on Chiefs but just a reminder that sometimes we need to remember and support the people who made us who we are in life.
