Soweto’s own lager

Mad Mead Brewing Co, started by MSc chemical engineering graduate and “chief beer officer” Ndumiso Madlala, has produced Soweto’s first craft beer – Soweto Gold.

“The first regional township-branded clear craft beer” is taking back the ancient African art of beer-brewing. Because the process is traditionally performed by women, Mad Mead trains only female master brewers.

Mad Mead produces its lagers and ales in Soweto itself at the uBuntu Kraal Brewery in Orlando West.

Its flagship lager is a dark, golden medium-bodied beer with “slightly hoppy fruitiness, low bitterness and a light, rounded, smooth finish”.

With 5.2% alcohol, it is an allday drinking beer.
