What is the Southern African Institute of Welding?
The Southern African Institute of Welding (SAIW) is a not-forprofit technical organisation dedicated to furthering standards in welding fabrication and related technologies.
Established in 1948, it is a founder member of the International Institute of Welding (IIW). The SAIW provides training programmes, consultancy and industry support services. Based in Joburg, with branches in Cape Town and Durban, the institute is active throughout southern Africa and also has experience further afield, predominantly in central Africa, the Indian Ocean islands and the United Arab Emirates.
The SAIW offers a range of courses in welding technology and nondestructive testing at its training school in Joburg. It also conducts training at venues across South Africa and in other countries.
SAIW courses are developed and maintained under the guidance of industry-based committees, and presented by qualified and experienced lecturers. All courses comply with international standards.
Training facilities include a practical welding school with individual state-of-the-art welding bays, and modern and fully equipped classrooms and laboratories.
SAIW Training Services is an IIW-approved training body.
The SAIW has offered training courses for more than 30 years. An SAIW qualification has long been regarded as the industry standard in South Africa and also enjoys international recognition.
An authorised national body of IIW since 2003, the SAIW offers the full range of IIW qualifications (engineer, technologist, specialist, practitioner, welder and inspector). The SAIW also has strong affiliations to leading universities, such as Wits and the University of Pretoria.
