Women rule third Mbokodo Awards

Women were the he­roes of the hour at Kyalami’s The­atre on the Track on Fri­day night as mu­si­cians, po­ets and a first lady gath­ered for the Mbokodo Women in the Arts Awards.

This was the third in­stal­ment of the awards, which are staged by Carol Bouwer Pro­duc­tions and cel­e­brate women’s con­tri­bu­tion to the arts in South Africa.

Ra­dio star Anele Mdoda was the MC for the night. Among the hugely tal­ented guests were the leg­endary Ma­hotella Queens, who were hon­oured with the Miriam Makeba Lifetime Achieve­ment Award.

Mafik­i­zolo’s Nh­lanhla Nciza won in the women in mu­sic cat­e­gory and looked gor­geous in a bright-blue dress, while Florence Masebe won in the women in film cat­e­gory.

Poet Lebo Mashile, me­dia pro­fes­sional Shado Twala, ac­tress and vice-chair­per­son of Peo­ple Op­pos­ing Women Abuse Rosie Motene and First Lady Bongi Ngema-Zuma, who has sup­ported the awards since their in­cep­tion, were also at the event.
