Bespoke tribal

STR.CRD, in case you didn’t know, is Joburg’s ruthlessly hip annual, urban, street culture trade fair that highlights fashion design and music.

One of the brightest of the bright young things at STR.CRD each year is the guest designer. This year it’s Joburg illustrator Lazi Mathebula, who works under the moniker, Greiispaces.

His work is bold and unique, edgily etching colour into blocks.

His logo for STR.CRD (above) may, at first glance, seem like yet more tribal-inspired festival branding. But keep looking and you’ll see there’s more going on. The totemic design draws on a tradition of African woodcut and spins a clever twist – it’s based around a shirt collar to reflect the STR.CRD vibe. Call it bespoke tribal if you wish.

STR.CRD takes place at Constitution Hill on November 8 from 11am. Tickets are R150 at the door and R50 online.
