L ocal pop star Kelly Khumalo was booed by some angry revellers on New Year’s Eve when she performed her hit song Asine.

Khumalo was on stage at the annual free Can Do! Woza 2015 New Year’s Eve bash on Mary Fitzgerald Square in central Joburg.

Two music industry sources who were at the gig said that when Khumalo and her dancers walked on stage to perform Asine, some sections of the crowd booed and jeered.

Asine, which was written by music producer Sello “Chicco” Twala, is about a woman accused of killing her husband. After Khumalo’s partner, Bafana Bafana captain Senzo Meyiwa, was murdered in October, the song raised some eyebrows.

One person at the gig said when Asine began playing, many partygoers became upset.

“But that did not stop Kelly from performing. She put on a brave face and continued to give a splendid performance to her fans,” the source said.

A second source blamed Durbanites for the booing – Meyiwa was born and raised in Umlazi – and said Asine upsets them.

“People will be set free as soon

as they know who killed Meyiwa,” said the source.

A music industry insider, responding to news of the jeering, said Khumalo should stop singing Asine until Meyiwa’s killer or killers have been caught. “As much as we understand that she has to provide for her two children, people are still angry,” said the insider.

Khumalo did not respond to requests from City Press for comment.

There was drama for another artist in Durban – kwaito star Mkhonzeni “Professor” Langa left the Fact Durban Rocks party before performing his scheduled set. Langa confirmed to City Press that he was billed to perform at the event, which was organised by Afrotainment’s Mthokozisi Khathi, known to his fans as DJ Tira.

Langa said: “I was there in time for my performance. But please phone the organisers, they’ll explain to you why I did not perform.”

Khathi did not respond to requests for comment. A source who was backstage on New Year’s Eve said Langa was supposed to perform at 11.30pm, but the organisers “kept on shifting his time slot”.

The source, who witnessed Langa’s departure and saw Khathi following the artist and begging him to return, added: “He had no choice but to leave the place, as he had other gigs on the same night.”
