“I came across two police cars and asked them to come with me to my shop and protect me while I removed my stuff because I feared that the looters would also target my shop. They refused and told me that they were about to go off duty.

“I begged them and when they didn’t budge, I offered to pay them R6 000 – R 1000 each – because there were six of them. It was only then that they agreed to escort me back to my shop, but by the time we arrived, the gate and the doors were broken down, and people had looted most of the stuff.

“There were about four guys still taking stuff in my shop when we arrived. I told the police to arrest them, but they just watched and did nothing.”
