Chakalaka gets posh for the president’s lunch
President Jacob Zuma was joined by his third wife, Bongi Ngema, for a five-star lunch on Thursday that began with aubergine chakalaka.
The “CEO lunch”, hosted by World Economic Forum boss Klaus Schwab, the German engineer and economist who founded the World Economic Forum in 1971, was held in the sunken ballroom at the posh Westin Hotel, next to the Cape Town International Convention Centre where the conference was held. Hotel security was tight and some dignitaries joked that entering the building felt like passing through the eye of a needle.
In the soft-carpeted ballroom, the menu for the continent’s most powerful palates included a starter of springbok carpaccio on aubergine chakalaka with sultana purée and saffron aioli, pan-fried farmed kob with warm butternut and barley salad and chimichurri dressing for mains, and bittersweet chocolate delice with orange peel Florentine for dessert. City Press obtained a copy of the menu, embossed in simple, silver letters.
The long table was laid out in white linen with bread baskets and large Gerbera daisies in orange and yellow.
Also spotted in the room were billionaire Patrice Motsepe and Barclays Africa chief executive Maria Ramos.
