legendary storyteller Gcina Mhlope, as well as a range of emerging writers, including poet David wa Maahlamela, Isaac Shabangu, Bulie Mokena and winner for two years running Given Mdliva. Already holding Nobel laureate status, Wole Soyinka has set his sights on an Oxford professorship.

One of the few academic posts that require the applicant to be elected, the process required Soyinka to submit a CV and statement, which he apparently refused to do. Nevertheless, with everyone from the Archbishop of Canterbury to Ben Okri backing him, it’s likely that he will still be a strong contender. The results of the vote will be announced on June 19.
