Wayde van Niekerk’s record-breaking feat at the Birmingham Diamond League meeting last Sunday heralded a week of firsts for South African athletes on the international stage.

Stephen Mokoka finished third at the Birmingham event to became the first South African athlete to finish on the podium in a Diamond League race over distances ranging from 3 000m to 10 000m.

Also, sprinter Henrico Bruintjies (21) recorded the fastest time by a South African in an international meet at sea level with a 10.06 victory at the Josef Odložil Memorial meeting in Prague, Czech Republic, on Monday night.
