Taking over the baton from Malorie Blackman, master illustrator Chris Riddell has been named the new children’s laureate.

Although perhaps not as well known as his writer counterparts, Riddell is the hand behind some of the bestselling and most loved children’s titles. These include Riddell’s own Ottoline series and the Pirate Diary by Richard Platt.

Riddell has pushed the boundaries of children’s illustrations and infamously included a drawing of the queen kissing Sleeping Beauty, which sparked wide controversy.
